Tips Du jour
Kosher Saltshaker
When sprinkling Kosher salt on steaks or other foods your prepping for grilling it is hard to get a even coating using your hands. Holes in a regular saltshaker are too small for the larger grains of Kosher salt to pass through. Try storing your Kosher salt in a clean spice jar with a shaker top. The holes are a perfect size to dispense the larger grains.
Hulling Strawberries
The serrated tip of a grapefruit spoon is a better tool to remove hulls from Strawberries than a paring knife for removing the green crown from strawberries. It’s faster, easier to maneuver and wastes less fruit.
Keeping tomatoes
Place unwashed tomatoes stem end down and at room temperature, we have found that this prevents moisture from escaping and bacteria from entering through the scar, prolonging shelf life. If the vine is still attached leave it on the tomato stem end up.

Restaurant review
This time we are reviewing a restaurant which is a bit of out of the norm for us and way out of the neighborhood.
Palm Court Grill in the Original Davenport
When we are traveling east, we often stay in Spokane. We usually stay at the Davenport tower hotel, a Marriott property. We treat ourselves to a wonderful dinner at the Palm Court Grill in the Original Davenport across the street. This hotel is reminiscent of the old Olympic Hotel in downtown Seattle.
The restaurant takes the Passport card, so if you have one of those your meal is cut in half, the same way for breakfast in the AM. We usually manage to hit this place at least once a year and pay for the Passport with one visit with dinner and breakfast. I admit it is a bit of an extravagance but well worth it. You obviously don’t need to stay at the hotel to enjoy a meal and use the Passport card.
Oh, did I mention that the dessert is worth a trip to Spokane on its own.

Pretty Posies
I hope you all are enjoying the containers in the front of our building. We changed the display this year, adding a bit more color. Thank everyone who have volunteered in helping to keep them watered and healthy. Thank you, Betty, for helping with the shopping and planting them.
