Interesting TV Platform
Jerry and I discovered a TV application called Wondrium (https://www.wondrium.com/)
We watched a series named History Discovery, Travel to Rome and Beyond. The host of the series is Dr Darius Arya. This series took you from Rome to Syria, Jordan, France, Spain, and Morocco covering many of the areas that Rome incorporated into its empire. Darius is an archaeologist and a recipient of a Fulbright scholarship. It happens we have had the pleasure of having Darius lead us in Rome through the antiquities while visiting Rome two different times. We have seen him on TV a couple of different times. Jerry is interested in Roman History so we look and watch for anything we can find on the subject.
The streaming service has many different lectures. If anyone is interesting in learning it is fantastic platform. We have also watched a lecture about Iceland and one of a series on how to use the camera on your “smart phones “last night we watched a couple of episodes on France. There are hundreds of other lectures and series, Pompeii, Greece, Turkey, Cathedrals and many more.
Check it out on its website or Google www.wondrium.com. There were some free coupons available.
Book Club was at Cheri’s, we chatted about 2 books written by Helen Tursten, A Elderly Lady is up to no Good and An Elderly Lady Must not be Crossed, they were fun little books with some interesting twists to the stories.
Our next Book Club get together will be on Feb 13th at Edy’s. We will be discussing Pachinko a historic novel by Min Jin Lee. Pachinko is an epic tale of family, identity, love, death and survival.
Let Edy know if you plan to attend the meeting.
A great product
Soil Love
Soillove is a Laundry-soil-stain remover. We have been using this product for several years. It works on most stains you manage to get on fabric. I gave it a tough job over the weekend, we had a dinner here with family and since it doesn’t matter how old grandchildren they still manage to spill on tablecloths. I had wine, cherry port sauce to try to remove from a white tablecloth. It worked like a champ, just apply it to the stain and then launder as usual.
Swiss Steak
Ingredients
- 2 pounds beef bottom round, trimmed of excess fat.
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper.
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil or bacon drippings
- 1 large onion thinly sliced.
- 2 cloves garlic, minced.
- 2 stalks celery, chopped.
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika.
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
Directions
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
Cut the meat with the grain into 1/2-inch-thick slices and season on both sides with the salt and pepper. Place the flour into a pie pan. Dredge the pieces of meat on both sides in the flour mixture. Tenderize the meat using a needling device, until each slice is 1/4-inch thick. Dredge the slices on both sides once more and set aside.
Add enough of the bacon drippings or vegetable oil to just cover the bottom of a 4 to 5-quart Dutch oven set over medium-high heat. Once the oil begins to shimmer, add the steaks to the pan, being careful not to overcrowd. Cook until golden brown on both sides, approximately 2 minutes per side. Remove the steaks to a plate and repeat until all the steaks have been browned.
Remove the last steaks from the pot and add the onions, garlic, and celery. Sauté for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the tomato paste and stir to combine. Next add the tomatoes, paprika, oregano, Worcestershire sauce and beef broth and stir to combine. Return the meat to the pot, submerging it in the liquid. Cover the pot and place it in the oven on the middle rack. Cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until the meat is tender and falling apart.

Gone but not Forgotten
Northlake Tavern and Pizza House
I’m sure you have all read or heard that the long-established pizza restaurant the Northlake Tavern is going to close at the end of this month. It was opened by Herb and Evelyn Friedman; Herb was from NYC and had been a longshoreman in the city. He moved here and they opened the Northlake in 1953, it was considered a medical/dental student hangout. Herb and Evelyn were patients in the dental office I worked at on Queen Anne Hill. Herb met my boss while he was in dental school at the U of WA and so developed a long friendship. We used to go there often while I worked in the office. It will be greatly missed by a lot of people in this area. The new name of the Northlake will be Big Mario’s Pizza at Northlake
Andi and Drake managed to go one last time a week or two ago for lunch. They said there were lines to get in and lines still waiting when they left. Some friends of ours and ourselves, all of us were fans of the North Lake. decided we were also going to go for one last time, but then common sense kicked in, we decided we were all too old to stand outside in the Seattle weather and wait for a table. Instead, we all went to a place named Santorini’s.

This restaurant is across from Costco on the west side of Aurora. It used to be The Grinder. About a block south of Discount tire, on the same side of the street.
A few days after my surgery when I returned home, my daughter ordered from The Good Burger and had the food delivered to my condo. The burgers were delicious and huge. She ordered onion rings with the burgers, and they were so yummy. My sister and I had the mushroom burger and my brother-in-law had the California burger. If you try it, be ready to be stuffed and happy. I would try it again.
They also have many other good-looking items on the menu.
