Richmond Manor News | September 2024

Was that some kind of fantastic storm we had a couple of weeks ago. I loved it, it went on forever.  What a show.

Have you noticed reports of early snow in areas like Whitefish Montana, Mt. Bachelor and Mt. Hood in Oregon and Banff in Canada.  Don’t know if means we will be getting lots of snow this coming winter but it sure has started early

It looks like we will have a bit of the Dog Days of Summer in our neighborhood.  Enjoy it while it lasts.

Traveling Neighbors

Edy wrote up a brief note about her and her granddaughter’s trip to London.  It should be like they had a fantastic time. What a wonderful opportunity for Freya .

Edy and her granddaughter Freya had a terrific week in London. Museums! Plays in the west end! picnic in St. James Park and seeing Buckingham Palace! Harry Potter adventures! Backstage tour of the Opera House and ice cream in Covent Garden!  Listening to street performers on the South bank!  So much more…..

Book Club

It is time to startup our monthly get together to talk about our favorite books and catch up with each other’s lives. The first meeting will be on Sunday, September 8th in the Book Nook/Library at 3:00 in the afternoon. So, bring your list of books you think everyone would like and we will pick the books we will read and discuss.  We will also determine who will be hosting the meetings.

New Neighbors

We have two new residents here at Richmond Manor.

Unit 313– Previous owned by Helen Shirk- New owner is Carla Hoekzema

Unit 309-Previous owned by Midori Johnson-New owner Gina Holindrake

When you see these ladies in the halls or elevator take time to introduce yourself and welcome them to our Richmond Manor community.

Sad News

We have recently been informed that our previous neighbor and manager has passed.  Molly Mills Sabol was an original owner, she lived in unit 210.  She took the job of building manager.  She left RMC about 11 years ago; she had her husband Dean moved to a home in Edmonds.  She was well liked and did a great job as manager.  We remember Molly fondly. There will be a memorial service later this month. As more information comes to light, we will get it out to you.

This information is for those who are healthy enough to donate their blood or those who know someone who’d be interested in donating blood…

Bloodworks Northwest is going to do the blood donation drive at the parking lot of the fire station across the street from our condo community on Saturday, September 07, 2024 from 9am to 3pm.

To schedule an appointment, please go to: https://donate.bloodworksnw.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/72412

It seems that Bloodworks Northwest holds blood donation drives every 8 weeks, usually the 1st Saturday of the odd number month at the same time and place.

A hearty breakfast is much recommended on the day of blood draw to prevent feeling lightheaded later. Staying well hydrated also helps.

Thank you very much for your interest and consideration… ❤️🤗

Getting to Know You
This is our “Person-of-the Month,” Drake Loeser

Born in April 1942 in Neptune, New Jersey. My father was from Rochester, New York and was a first generation GermanAmerican. My mother was the youngest of a farm family also from upstate New York and went on to college to become an elementary school educator. Dad went to the University of Rochester studying engineering and had a career as a naval officer. As a result the family lived in both northern and southern California as well as Massachusetts and Maryland (Washington, D.C.).

I attended San Diego State University and Cal-State Long Beach where I studied sociology and went on to work for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services as a medical social worker. Andrea and I met at CSULB and she became an elementary educator. In 1969 LA County sent me to Seattle and the University of Washington to study clinical social work graduating in 1971.

We needed to return to LA but knew that one day we would return to the Pacific Northwest. My career was devoted to alcoholism rehabilitation for 10 years and another 20 years as a nephrology social worker in the dialysis and kidney transplant units in LA County Health Services.

I retired in 2001 and we fulfilled our dream to return to the Northwest. We located on south Whidbey Island and became active in the Langley United Methodist Church after being Presbyterians nearly our whole lives.

Our daughter lives in Kirkland and son is a firefighter who lives nearby Shoreline. He told us about Richmond Manor and had been in the building helping residents even before we arrived.

We are now involved in the Edmonds United Methodist Church with the food bank and Sunday School programs in particular.

We arrived at Richmond Manor in May 2018 and perhaps most enjoy the other residents. Our unit is very quiet, and we have a considerable sense of security. We enjoyed gardening so here we are on the gardening committee. People don’t know that I have played the cello since I was in elementary school and was in a youth orchestra in high school that was directed by a conductor who once led the LA Philharmonic.

I am still a fan of classical music and especially the Cascade Symphony in Edmonds

Entertainment – TV

Jerry and I found an interesting documentary on NetflixInside the Mind of a Dog.  I don’t think you have to be a dog lover to find this film interesting.

But……………… if you are a dog lover you will find the following film fantastic.

This can be found on Netflix.

Hachi A Dog ’s Tale:  Starring Richard Gere, this movie is based on a true story.  Have your Kleenex ready, it is a tearjerker.

Community Events

The annual Potluck went on as one of great success.  A great crew showed up to set up tables and did a great job of breaking down and putting everything away when were finished for the evening.  There were 28 in attendance, great food and lots of socializing.  We missed all who couldn’t be there.  Carole took a few photos at the end of the evening.

RMC Christmas

Our next event will be our annual Christmas social to be held on December 1st.  As always it will be held in the Book Nook.  Stay tuned for more information.

Neighborhood News

Le Petit Paquet

I’m sure you have noticed that the Le Petit Paquet has been closed for the last few weeks.  Their website indicates that this is a temporary closure and will be reopened on Oct. 5th.

Bartell’s

Another closure in the neighborhood is Bartell’s located on 185th and Aurora.  They have closed their doors for good.  The Bartell’s in Edmonds is still open for business.

Aquarium

Seattle Aquarium’s new Tropical Exhibit opened yesterday.  Here is a Seattle Times article telling all about the facility.

You can read the full article here.

Good Stuff

I want to make you aware of a few products that we really like…

Trader Joes has a product in their freezer department that we swear by.  We aren’t big bread eaters in the Taylor household but like a good baguette when we have pasta on the dinner menu.  Trader Joes offers the perfect product. The answer for us is a package of 6 mini–French Baguettes.  They are frozen and are easily thawed by putting them in a toaster oven for a few minutes.  The perfect answer.

The Taylor household also loves ice cream, Kroger/Fred Meyer offer a line of Ice cream, Private Selection, that we find very good.  The Chocolate Ganache and Vanilla are both very good, nice and creamy and the price is right.  There are several other flavors that are also very tasty.  For a half gallon it is about $4.50 depending on if you have their card or not, but a good deal regardless.  Our next best favorite brand is Talenti which is a bit more but good ice cream.
