Richmond Manor News | December 2024

We are definitely into the Holiday season; Christmas lights are everywhere; it seems every house is covered with a light show.  I love it, I could drive around a couple of times a week and oh and ah at them all

What a Party

Sunday evening, we had our annual RMC Christmas party.  A great turnout, maybe 30 of us in attendance.  We need to expand the Book Nook, so we have more room.  The array of foodstuffs was overwhelming, a wide variety of goodies. It was wonderful to see some of our new residents in attendance and have a chance to chat and get to know them.

We don’t seem to have any photos from the party, so if you have some you could forward them to me and gain my eternal appreciation.

Thanksgiving

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  We had a lovely day with family, just a small get-together.  We went to Ferndale and on the way home I decided to drive back south on Chuckanut Drive.

I’m sure it has been at least 50 years since I have been on the road, it is one of the most scenic drives in the state. The view and road is still the same, still narrow and a bit scary, maybe more houses than I remember.

I remember  as a child going on Sunday drives with my mom and dad, somehow my dad who was had lived in South Dakota managed to find he liked oysters so we would drive down on a nice sunny summer day and go to Taylor Shellfish Farm and he would buy a jar of oysters and then back we would go and he would have them for dinner and was in heaven. Apparently, there is a small restaurant in Taylor Shellfish where you can get a variety of seafood, including the elusive geoduck, which I like.    If you have never been to it, take the time to drive one way or another, it is lovely, there are a couple of other restaurants along the way you might want to try, a couple of them are the  Chuckanut Manor and the Oyster Bar.  You end up going north, in Fairhaven which is great to explore.  I would recommend you take this drive during the week instead of a weekend.

Book club was held at Carole’s home.  Carole puts out a fantastic spread of treats.  We chatted about Lion Women of Tehran by Marjam Kamali.  We had a good discussion; I found it an interesting book.

We have no book club in Dec. and so will meet at Linda W’s home, #301.  The book we will be discussing is Good Night Irene, by Luis Alberto Urrea.  This book is about a friendship between two women in WW11.  I’m looking forward to reading it, it is my favorite genre.  Be sure and let Linda know if you plan to come to the meeting.

Blackbird building listed for sale.

It does not appear that a sale there would force out Blackbird.

Helpful Neighbor

Hello Neighbors and a special welcome to our newest residents. I have a special offer for ALL of you. Our closet light rail station is just up at the other end of our street and it’s brand new.

IF ANY OF YOU PLAN TO TRAVEL AND USE THE LIGHT RAIL TO GET TO THE AIRPORT, I WILL GIVE YOU A RIDE TO THE NEARBY STATION AND/OR PICK YOU UP WHEN YOU RETURN.

I am retired, an able and safe driver , and if our calendar is clear, I would enjoy doing this.

Since the Northgate light rail station opened, I’ve been giving our downstairs neighbor # 201 rides when she travels and it has deepened our friendship.

Contract me if I can help you.

Does anyone know what is happening over at the Le Petite across the street?  I have seen lights on and cars in front but don’t have a clue as to what is happening

Entertainment -TV

We found another interesting series named Our Oceans.  It is showing on NetFlix.  It is a five-part documentary that explores the wonder of Earth’s oceans. We watched one episode so far and found it beautiful and filled with great information. The photography is outstanding, the narration by Obama is not up to quality of a  Attenbourgh, Freeman or better yet James Earl Jones.

The Taylor household are great fans of Winston Churchill so watch and read almost anything we can get our hands on about him.  Churchill At War is a four-part docuseries, directed by Malcolm Venville, that examines Winston Churchill’s role as British prime minister during World War II. The series combines digitally colorized and restored footage, readings of Churchill’s writings using an AI-generated version of the PM’s voice, expert interviews, and dramatic reenactments to explain just how influential Churchill was in standing up to Adolf Hitler, bringing the Americans into the fight, and ultimately prevailing in the massive, bloody conflict.

Nova,  on PBS is having a couple of episodes about the Rebuilding of Notre Dame Cathedral.  They will air on Dec. 11 at 6:00 PM and again on Dec. 18 at 6:00.   I was looking at the Nova website this AM while getting information and there are several short films on various projects in the rebuilding process that were quite interesting.  The cathedral was damaged extensively by a fire in April 2019.  And opened to the public yesterday.

Charity

Tunnels to Tower Foundation

Tunnel to Tower was founded in memorial for Stephen Siller a FDNY firefighter who lost his life on 9/11/2001. His brother founded the foundation in his honor.

The mission of Tunnel to Towers foundation is twofold to honor fallen heroes and be supportive to those they leave behind.

The foundation has several programs to accomplish their mission. They have raised 250 million dollars so far.

One is their Smart Home Program which builds mortgage-free homes for injured veterans so they can gain their independence.

Another is to pay off the mortgages of families of firefighters and police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

They will have given 200 mortgage free homes this year.

As you may have noticed, our blog is a bit late, and not as robust as usual.  We have decided we will be publishing the blog every other month.  It is just difficult finding content for one each month.  So, the next one will be published at the end of Jan. Feel free to send me any bits of information you think your neighbors might enjoy and we will include it in the next blog.

We wish you all the most joyful Christmas ever.  Enjoy family and friends and celebrate the meaning of Christmas.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
