We are winding down from summer into fall, my favorite time of year. We still have lots of beautiful weather in front of us so don’t be fooled by the bit of gray skies.
Traveling Neighbors
- Carole R. has been down in Calif. visiting family.
- Edy was in Calif. also visiting friends.
Sept. birthdays
- I missed Carole R’s birthday in August.
- John W. and Myrna share Sept. birthdays.
Another Great Event.
The potluck went off without a hitch. I think we had 28 in attendance. We missed all of you that couldn’t make it this time. Thank you, Laurie, for the idea of buying chicken for the main dish, I think everyone enjoyed it a lot. Also thank both Laurie and Kaare for being the runners and picking up the chicken. We had a great crew setting up and breaking down tables and chairs, thanks everyone for their help.
The next event on the books is the annual Christmas Party coming up on Dec. 1st. So, put it on your calendars. More information about it later.
Restaurant review
I’m reviewing two different places today. One a bit like Hill’s and the other a bit fancier.
Aurora Borealis
This place is at 16708 Aurora Ave. N. The old Drift on Inn location. (A secret to getting there is to go down Dayton just past the cemetery, turn left on 165th then left on Aurora and you are right there)
206-629-5744
Hours… 6:00 AM-11:30 PM
Happy Hour 2:00-5:00
Dinner 5-11:00
They have a large list of entertainment scheduled so check out their website for information. I’ll post the list of events down on the bulletin board.
Service was great although it wasn’t busy when we went for lunch. The manager, Ryan, gave us a tour of the place since Jerry was interested in a space for meetings in the future.
Le Coin
Located at 4210 Fremont Ave North
206-734-7082
www.lecoinseattle.com. It lists itself as a Modern French Restaurant.
We had dinner there on Sat. night. We dined on fois gras and steak frites, it was almost like being in Paris. Great service. They have some outside seating. I would go there again for a special dinner.
Book club commences again on Monday, Sept. 9th at Linda Wechsler’s home, #301 at 7:00PM
We will be setting up our reading list and who will be hosting it every month. So, bring your calendar and favorite reads. I’m looking forward to getting together with our neighbors, it is always fun to catch up with what everyone is doing and of course talk about the book of the month. Let Linda know if you plan to attend.
Tips Du Jour
Peeling just one tomato
Blanching tomatoes (or peaches) in a pot of boiling water is a great way to remove their skins, but when you need to peel just a single piece of fruit, try this shortcut.
- Microwave 1 ½ Cups of water in a 2-cup liquid measuring cup for 1-2 minutes until simmering.
- Cut a shallow X into the bottom of the fruit, drop it into the hot water for 30 seconds, and then transfer it to ice water for 30 seconds.
- The skin pulls right off.
Hands free Seasoning
Keep your hands clean when seasoning chops, steads, or cutlets with this tip.
- Sprinkle a plate or other flat surface liberally with salt and pepper (or other seasonings), then use a pair of tongs to lay the meat on the plate.
- Season the top side of the meat
- Use the tongs to transfer the meat to the stove top or grill.
Recipe Du Jour
Black Bean Salad
1 can drained black beans
1 can drained whole kernel corn
4 T. chopped cilantro
1 T minced jalapeno peppers
1 tsp minced garlic
½ tsp ground cumin
Salt & pepper to taste
2 chopped green onions
1 ripe tomato
1 sliced avocado
1/3 cu0p corn oil
¼ cup fresh lime juice
Add all ingredients except beans, corn, tomato and avocado together.
Mix dressing with beans & corn. Add tomatoes and avocado at the last minute.
I almost always double the recipe. I try to make the recipe a day ahead of when I want to serve it. Some folks like to add red or green peppers but that won’t happen in our house.
New Recycling rules
Many thanks to Cheri for researching this new information.
A MESSAGE FROM SHORELINE RECOLOGY, OUR LOCAL RECYLING COMPANY
An important recycle change includes the elimination of plastic bags and plastic films (i.e. plastic wrapped around cases of bathroom tissue) from the items accepted in your blue bin. Plastic bags and film cause significant challenges in the recycling process and are difficult to capture and recycle when mixed with other recyclables. This material should be bagged together and taken to a drop off location, such as a local grocery store, or placed in the garbage as a last resort.
Please help us reduce recycling contamination by keeping non-recyclable materials out of the blue bin. Only the following materials are accepted:
- Paper
- Cardboard
- Metal
- Glass (bottles, jars)
- Plastic tubs, jugs, bottles and rigid plastics larger than 3 inches
Additionally, recyclable material in your blue bin should be empty, clean and dry.”
Enjoy the rest of the summer.
